Stefan became the CIO and IT Director for the University of Wisconsin–Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in February 2020. From 2001 to 2020, he focused on Cybersecurity at UW–Madison, performing in roles such as the Deputy Chief Information Security Officer, Assistant Director of Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance, and the campus HIPAA Security Officer. His accomplishments include establishing mandatory access control processes for enterprise applications, developing standards for assisting the security of identity management systems, and establishing cybersecurity strategy for campus. Stefan played a prominent role in building the Office of Cybersecurity from a team of 5 in 2001 to 36 people in 2020. Previous to his higher education experience, he worked as a computer engineer and database administrator for the Wisconsin State Legislature automating and securing the bill drafting process. Stefan’s work includes publishing the Open Enterprise Security Architecture (O-ESA): A Framework and Template for Policy-Driven Security. He passed the Certified Information System Security (CISSP).
