Ed Murphy is a Director and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at the University of Wisconsin System. He has been in the higher education information technology field since 2002. Before moving into the CISO position in the System Office, he served as the Deputy CIO and CISO for the University of Wisconsin Colleges & Extension. Prior to coming to the University of Wisconsin System, he held a variety of technical and leadership positions at the University of Arizona. Mr. Murphy’s recent accomplishments include developing an Information Security (IS) Strategy, IS policy, and procedure development; developing a system-wide incident response plan; guiding the creation of a new Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) program; and leading the deployment of an enterprise security infrastructure across the UW System. His experience spans both academic and administrative technologies. He has a proven track record of information security governance, policy development, ERP systems, web applications, analytics, and organizational change strategies. Mr. Murphy has a passion for aligning information security strategy with institutional strategies and goals. He has presented at the EDUCAUSE national conference and various regional conferences. Mr. Murphy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) from the University of Arizona and a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Maryland.
